How do you convert insulin syringe units to mL?
Divide the units by the number in the syringe's name. On a U-100 syringe, 100 units is 1 mL, so each unit is 0.01 mL. On a U-40 syringe, 40 units is 1 mL, so each unit is 0.025 mL.

Why does the syringe type matter?
A unit is a different volume on each syringe type, so the same number of units holds a different amount of liquid. Drawing 20 units on a U-40 syringe gives 0.5 mL, but 20 units on a U-100 syringe gives 0.2 mL. Always use the numbers for the syringe in your hand. Most insulin syringes sold today are U-100.
